Writing a Comic Book Poem – Spoken Word

Spoken Word is a fairly angry Comic Book Poem that looks at poetry as it is written and spoken. I wrote this several days after attending a Poetry Slam in Glasgow. The poets received great responses from the audience , but the content of their poetry was very self indulgent. The poets mainly performed poems about themselves and did not really take any chances in content or style. However the performances were fantastic and that is why they received a great audience reaction. I suppose Spoken Word is a Comic Book Poem reaction to Poetry Slams and the lack of imagination in the content of many spoken word performers.

Spoken Word
This is poetry
not political
not about yes or no
just words from my mouth
all the way to your ears

This is poetry
not perspective
not about right of wrong
just words written on a page
all the way to your ears

Read listen and decide
if you want to think
it’s up to you
it’s your decision
