Illustrating a Comic Book Poem – Sleeping

Sleeping is the first collaboration with Franklin Poems. Franklin Poems is a website and blog dedicated to presenting Illustrated Poems. More information on this collaboration will be given in a separate blog post, but the act of illustrating the poem was different than previous Comic Book Poems.

Sleeping - Comic Book Poem
For Sleeping I wanted to separate the text from the images and look at ‘pin ups’ and splash pages in Comic Books as opposed to sequential art and panels.

The image itself uses nothing but traditional media (apart form the text). Here I used pastels to create a large scale (A1 in size) image that made use of blank space to add to the drama and convey the poetry. I enjoy working in pastels and like the light hues and tones that can be used to build up the imagery. After completing the large scale pastel work, I took a digital photograph and then added the text.

For the image itself I interpreted the words at face value and presented someone sleeping. This Comic Book Poem does not look to experiment in style, but looks to see what can be achieved in ‘pin ups’ for the Comic Book Poems project.
