Illustrating a Comic Book Poem – Porcelin Breakfast

As with A Perfect Breeze, I wanted to illustrate Porcelin Breakfast by using traditional media such as marker pens and fine liners. However in this case I wanted to combine this with digital techniques to create a collage effect.

The first panel shows a grenade which I illustrated by hand, but the second panel shows the outline of a body which I created digitally. This approach was new for me and I liked the fact that we had conflicting styles going from panel to panel.
Overall the approach I took was to make the Comic Book Poem look similar to a child’s sketch or drawing. I think this is obvious in the second page. The big reveal consumes the page, buts looks so ridiculous it should appears in the sketchbook of an angst ridden teenager or misled child.
